Maestro Abraham Chavez, Jr.
The Abraham Chavez Theatre, (known as the Chavez Theatre) is named after Maestro Abraham Chavez Jr., who is a long-time conductor at the El Paso Symphony Orchestra. He was also a longtime professor at the University of Texas at El Paso, or UTEP. He is a viloin soloist, and a cultural leader as well.

Chavez was born in 1927 and he was raised in El Paso, Texas. At the young age of 13, Chavez joined in the El Paso Symphony Orchestra (EPSO) as a violininst. By 18, five years after he joined, he was already a concertmaster. He attended El Paso High School, and by his senior year, he became a band director at Ysleta High School, because there was a citywide teacher shortage. He attended UTEP, which was called Texas Western Collage back then.
In 1966-1975, he conducted at University of Colorado Symphony in Boulder. Then, he conducted at EPSO in the years 1975-1992.
Some other accomplishments by Chavez includes conducting in the Santa Fe Orchestra. In a tour of 1972, he took the All-American Symphony Orchestra to six European Countries.
